(1 Samuel 16:14 NASB)
When we read the word "evil," we naturally think of it as the antithesis of "good." And certainly it is used that way many times in the Bible. "Evil" is often synonymous with wicked, and it is contrary to the nature and the will of God.
When we see God employing "an evil spirit," therefore,
NAS Genesis 37:20 "Now then, come and let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits; and we will say, 'A wild beast devoured him.' Then let us see what will become of his dreams!" (Gen 37:20 NAS)
NAS Genesis 41:3 Then behold, seven other cows came up after them from the Nile, ugly and gaunt, and they stood by the other cows on the bank of the Nile. (Gen 41:3 NAS)
NAS Genesis 47:9 So Jacob said to Pharaoh, "The years of my sojourning are one hundred and thirty; few and unpleasant have been the years of my life, nor have they attained the years that my fathers lived during the days of their sojourning." (Gen 47:9 NAS)
NAS Exodus 21:8 "If she is displeasing in the eyes of her master who designated her for himself, then he shall let her be redeemed. He does not have authority to sell her to a foreign people because of his unfairness to her. (Exo 21:8 NAS)
NAS Exodus 33:4 When the people heard this sad word, they went into mourning, and none of them put on his ornaments. (Exo 33:4 NAS)
NAS Numbers 11:1 Now the people became like those who complain of adversity in the hearing of the LORD; and when the LORD heard it, His anger was kindled, and the fire of the LORD burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp. (Num 11:1 NAS)
NAS Deuteronomy 28:35 "The LORD will strike you on the knees and legs with sore boils, from which you cannot be healed, from the sole of your foot to the crown of your head. (Deu 28:35 NAS)
NAS Job 2:7 Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.
NAS Nehemiah 2:2 So the king said to me, "Why is your face sad though you are not sick? This is nothing but sadness of heart." Then I was very much afraid.
NAS Judges 9:23 Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech, (Jdg 9:23 NAS)
NKJ Judges 9:23 God sent a spirit of ill will between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech, (Jdg 9:23 NKJ)
